This is what's great about Grian. He doesn't give a block by block tutorial. He teaches you how to build. Inspires you to go on and build your own creations. Shows you methods to use, not builds to duplicate. Exactly what we need to learn.
I've watched a lot of BbB tutorials, and while they're good, and I like the things I produce (most recently a lake in my world I want to fill with small ships), I feel like I only learn one or two quite specific things. Like, "oh, that trapdoor looks good, there," or "ah, I can use this framing!" They're good to know, but it's inefficient. I learn _that_ a thing looks good, not _why_ it does. The latter lets you generate your own solutions to problems, as opposed to relying on pre-generated solutions- Grian shows us _a_ solution to making good overhangs, while getting you to find _your_ solution to overhangs. No two Minecraft worlds are alike, and thus knowledge how is more important than knowledge that.
I know this video is 6 years old, but as someone who just discovers the international Minecraft community, I just have to say: This video is of amazing quality! It is absolutly clear why you are as successful as you are, putting that much effort, into such a simple video! Respect!
I CANNOT believe the detail and quality of these EXEMPLARY builds. This man is a genius. P.S: thank you for the part about square builds this is going to help me a ton.
I mean... you don’t need to build THAT detailed but the first 3 things he talked about is easy af. Just build like the villagers(oak planks wood and cobble) the end.
grian helped me improve so much in minecraft building i swear, i first saw this video years ago, and these techniques are basically instinct to me. thank you grian!
@Avery Games he literally makes videos on how to do the exact things he did. It all becomes second nature when you put in effort and make it a habit. It's not that hard.
Hey Grian! I just wanted to say that its been years since this was posted and I have noticed that since this video came out, it seems that building in general has gotten much better! Thank you being such a positive impact on the community!
sad that this omits the final rule: "break the rules if you know what you're doing". a part of my build style has square buildings with overdetailed interiors, but that works for me as my style focuses on tiny, detailed builds
can we just take a second to appreciate that Grian had to go through pain and build the same house at least twice and most of the time do it COMPLETELY differently to how he usually makes it? That must have been so painfully.....
Thank you for showing me how to make a better roof because when I first started Minecraft, my houses looked terrible. The reason that is because I built a pyramid for a roof. I will now improve my builds thanks to you. 😊
I like building with dirt, it can be mined my hand and if you build correctly you can grow grass on each floor and have green carpeting and balcony's with green on them, then throw in vines and 2 thick floors with 1 block of water and you have a vine and whatever you want farm and house all in one, use sand to make walls around the house so if a creeper blows them up, the wall will close the hole automatically. My house is usually symmetrical and square on purpose as it makes setting up red stone circuits easier. :)
I have to ask on your opinion: When I make the roof, sometimes I put stairs all-around the top in a pyramid pattern. I also clear out the excess blocks in the ceiling for space. Is that ok?
Personally, I would say no, as you don't quite get the right border with that style. I would just do the classic roof, a plus- shaped roof (peaks on all four sides), or if you're up to the challenge (not to be insulting), you could try one of those "deflated cone" roofs that you commonly see on fantasy towers. Was this helpful?
Ive learned, on my own, that oak wood, oak planks and cobblestone are great blocks to use when making a beginner house. For a modern house, quartz and concrete. That's what I think
I chose the practical way: Build 3 blocks tall cube so you have everything at one place to save time and in case of lack of space just build another same floor since you have a lot of already used space around your base.
thank you, i used to struggle with overdetailing alot and not figuring out why my builds looks messy, after seeing this video, my builds improved a ton
There was this one time when I was like 12 where a situation arose (I don’t remember what it was) but I said “the quicker the faster”… Like the quicker you get something done, the faster you get something done. I was dead serious when I said it, but it sounds so dumb looking back😂 I feel like this radiates the same energy as this comment😂😂
The "defying the laws of physics" thing is a thing in modern architecture. It's called a "cantilever" where the frame extends into the building and the weight of the rest of the building keeps it in place. But yes, a cantilever that big does look odd.
That was a great video I am a builder my self and i think you are absolutely right in everything you said because as an example i sometimes struggle with Over Detailing too. Have a great time with building guys💪🏼
There are definitely a few of these I'm doing. No custom trees, often square houses (but with simple roofs), little things like that. But that's because I'm not very good at working with custom trees (can't get them to look good) and more complex room layouts. I have been trying to get better at it, but the custom trees is just a nightmare for me 😅
Great helpful video but I can’t stand those weird lumpy roofs loads of builders make where they put random blocks and slabs throughout the roof. It doesn’t look good and it just really bothers me
wow, i never realised there are so many builders out there with the same mindset as i have. i always feel like the inside is perfect, but the outside SUCKS, and this video really helps. even though i know all this its great to touch up and see how it's done.
My favourite way to build nice houses because I'm usually in survival is to start off with a small block house then add on walls and floors and etc. once the basic structure is down, most of the time when I built the full house shape all at once then it looks weird
I remember making a large wooden hotel that has no details at all in a ripoff game of Minecraft. It was on one of the public servers, but after my mom's tablet broke I never could download the app again I was so super proud of it, so I hope that whomever owns it after me takes good care of 'The Wooden Hotel by OneOddKid' (my naming skills have always been bad lmao)
Here’s my process: Step 1: Acquire map of spawn. Step 2: Raze block within map chunk above river/sea level. Step 3: Place torch in NW corner and place torches in a 5x5 pattern across chunk. Step 4: Create dirt path along perimeter and through the middle, separating the 4 quadrants. Step 5: Place foundation in the crossroads in a 9x9. Here’s my problem: I want my house to be omni-symmetrical. I want the shape to be the same shape from the 4 corners. I’m willing to unbox the 9x9 in the 4 directions and rounding the corners. But when I start to build up, I find issues. My base pallet is Stone brick 🧱 and the 3 polished stones (1 for each direction). Can you help me? It’s turning into a 3-story tower. Tip: if your just starting fresh on minecraft and started you need to get a lot of wood so you can build a four block wall and then fill in the open space with the rest and you have a easy house.
well, I'm not sure about that. personally, I've found that digging a hole into the side of a mountain can work out quite well. especially if you detail the outside with a overhang.
There is a downside to straying away from the rectangular shaped house, if you go crazy with the shape of the house, it'll end up looking like more of a mess than anything that's more pleasing and fictional
The thing I struggle with the most are circular roofs for example I want to build a cool wizard tower with a circular roof and I mostly fail.... I try to make it taller with some normal sized blocks but then it feels too tall and then I panic I don't know what to do and then I just ,,go for a break" and by that I mean never finishing it and move to a new build................... and I also don't know how to decorate big house walls.....................

I do make some mistakes in building, and they are stated in here, including straight up rectangular and perfect square houses, I'll put this to note and improve my building with these tips, thanks!!!
Exqueeze me, but that 5x5 house in the thumbnail is one of the most basic and easiest houses. It is so cute, cozy, and efficient because you need less materials, especially when you do survival. It is my fave house! Come on man!
Look man, once the crafting table is placed next to the furnace, it’s the perfect home
Um, 🤓 actually 🤓
Twenty eight thousands likes.
Not really, a house is a building with someone living in it, so technically its not a house if you get a furnace and a crafting table
with bed
And a bed:)
"Don't defy the laws of physics" Grian says as he casually walks on thin air.
@Happy_girlbff1 i like building my houses out of stripped logs and using normal logs for the frame
*me already defying physics by having a 2x1 box storing over 3400 cubic meters of solid gold*
I have no such weakness
Yep
when its true
neat
Moral of the video: Grian roasts 7 years old kids for 12 minutes straight
Not everyone over 7 is good at building. When I was younger- I sure as hell built better things than now, and im much much older now. I’ve become lazy
@IdioticMikeland yes :( private information my guy
Yep
Im 8
@Marissa Alvarez you're not 9 you're 5
This is what's great about Grian. He doesn't give a block by block tutorial. He teaches you how to build. Inspires you to go on and build your own creations. Shows you methods to use, not builds to duplicate. Exactly what we need to learn.
Yeah my dad showed him to me 7 years ago cause he found this cool guy who wasn’t doing block to block stuff
Me too and you definitely have to make it BETTER!
@Markus Aldawn Yes. Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he eats for a lifetime.
I've watched a lot of BbB tutorials, and while they're good, and I like the things I produce (most recently a lake in my world I want to fill with small ships), I feel like I only learn one or two quite specific things.

@Social 2021 is old. 2022 IS NOW THE BEST >:)
"Oh this seems nice!"
Grian:"OVERDETAILING"
"Yuck what a horrible build"
you should think for yourself
SAME LENEJSN LMFAO
You're a build?
This is litterally me
@Dekokiri same
I know this video is 6 years old, but as someone who just discovers the international Minecraft community, I just have to say:

This man is a genius.
P.S: thank you for the part about square builds this is going to help me a ton.
“And he decorated it, very Minimalisticly”
Me: right. MINIMALISTICLY.
Grian is literally gordon ramsay but in minecraft and without swearing
grian: “it’s not that difficult”
me: *sweats profusely trying to stop myself from making a shoe box house*
@played bedrock im am not bad at building and this video did not do anything to the way i build
I’m sure this is accurate to tons of people who watch these videos
i still haven't started framing but i do change the shape lmao
I mean... you don’t need to build THAT detailed but the first 3 things he talked about is easy af. Just build like the villagers(oak planks wood and cobble) the end.
grian helped me improve so much in minecraft building i swear, i first saw this video years ago, and these techniques are basically instinct to me. thank you grian!
Can’t believe Grian messed up
P.S. look at the gold
2:03
That house sucks i want people to stop making diamond houses for pros those are noob houses
yeah I saw lol
It was surely on purpose
MY EYES!
Me: *breathes*
Grian: "oh no no no you're doing it wrong."
I remember thinking those emerald diamond houses looked good and now that I look back they look like toothpaste.
"He detailed it very minimalisticly"
*shows house more detailed than any I've ever built*
It looks more complicated than it is bc of the varied block choice
@I'm A Potato it is possible
but I don't want to say that you are doubting anything where you think you can't reach
Lol
@Bali Raynor that’s why I build my houses in creative and then go into survival
@Avery Games he literally makes videos on how to do the exact things he did. It all becomes second nature when you put in effort and make it a habit. It's not that hard.
Grian: _”Do not make box houses.”_
Noobs: that’s all I can do
Hey Grian, just wanted to say I’m a huge fan, you taught me many good builds, your the best builder I have ever seen 😁
@Parson yeah thank
You’re*
Grian: Try not to defy physics too much
Also Grian: *Flies*
@Amanda Rockhold still it isnt
@R40S Orange Q Train Productions 2
@Aditya Bhalekar so true
@Fluto i think you have 8t the wrong way around muy dude
@ORFEAS DUNNE nice
7:56 Grian didn't build the back of that house.
Foreshadowing
LOL
Over detailing looks good if you have an old shack looking house with a lot of different types of wood.
This really improved my build by a lot thanks man!
can we just take a second to appreciate that Grian had to go through pain and build the same house at least twice and most of the time do it COMPLETELY differently to how he usually makes it? That must have been so painfully.....
He prolly just copy pasted it and added a couple of things
Why does Grian sound like a really tired teacher that just can't be mad?
off topic but i like my houses a lot better now bahahah, and i agree
the fact that he is mad
That’s because he is building isnt as easy as you think especially if he is building some undescribably insanely good build
He sounds like my English teacher but genderbend :)
1:46 I never thought to extend the log area since I usually use slabs or stairs for the roof and they always overhang.
overdetailing is fine for cave things, their kind of messy.but regular houses?not so much
Thank you for showing me how to make a better roof because when I first started Minecraft, my houses looked terrible. The reason that is because I built a pyramid for a roof. I will now improve my builds thanks to you. 😊
First sin is perfect for horror maps. (for example, when you want to create a long corridor in an abandoned ruins.)
I think your definition of minimalistic is very different from mine.
@gor The perfect home, comrade!
@gor Perfection. 😂👌
Agreed
Glad that someone pointed this out
I have to ask on your opinion:
When I make the roof, sometimes I put stairs all-around the top in a pyramid pattern. I also clear out the excess blocks in the ceiling for space. Is that ok?
Is it ok for you? I do that too and it's fine
@William Thompson yep
This video is just solid architectural and landscaping advice. Much of it are things that should be applied to real world projects
5:37 I like basic trees becouse they let me make my builds blend into the rest of the world
This video was so much help after watching it I built two houses that almost look the same as Grians :)
it'd be fun to make a house that commits each violation he mentioned simultaneously
@Draconic Duelist MORE DIAMONDS!
@Luke alias 1uk3 3*3*2
If you would watch Mumbo Jumbo's "anti-Grian" build video, you can see that he has beaten you in that idea.
Over details by also adding some emerald blocks on top add alot of more dimaondd and more crap
Doug J it’s a block 1-color rectangular house
Think you’d ever consider redoing older tutorials with the knowledge you’ve learnt from being on Hermitcraft?
Ive learned, on my own, that oak wood, oak planks and cobblestone are great blocks to use when making a beginner house. For a modern house, quartz and concrete. That's what I think
I like these building videos Grian, thank you so much I took your advice to make a pretty and decent house on a superflat world.
I chose the practical way:
Build 3 blocks tall cube so you have everything at one place to save time and in case of lack of space just build another same floor since you have a lot of already used space around your base.
Why live in a house when you can just dig a hole.
No thats not good
Lmao
Yeah and less cost of materials
Why live in a bunker when you can just make an underground water base?
Kudos to you.
If you want to overdetail i would recommend making it very clean otherwise on the roof and other less detailed areas.
Me after mining 3 oak logs:
*Yeah that'll do it.*
thank you, i used to struggle with overdetailing alot and not figuring out why my builds looks messy, after seeing this video, my builds improved a ton
Thank you a lot Grian i have really improved my building since i've watched this
Grian: "It's so easy to avoid overdetailing, just don't overdetail it."
Every 60 seconds in Africa, a minute passes
There was this one time when I was like 12 where a situation arose (I don’t remember what it was) but I said “the quicker the faster”…
Like the quicker you get something done, the faster you get something done. I was dead serious when I said it, but it sounds so dumb looking back😂 I feel like this radiates the same energy as this comment😂😂
I don’t get it
We can stop this
I love that meme
The "defying the laws of physics" thing is a thing in modern architecture. It's called a "cantilever" where the frame extends into the building and the weight of the rest of the building keeps it in place. But yes, a cantilever that big does look odd.
THIS WAS VERY HELPFUL KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
Grian's videos like this inspire me. Thank you Grian
I think this may well actually help me build better buildings in Survival settings. Thanks for assist, G.
Grian: _"He detailed it minimalistically"_
Footage: *Overly Detailed Rustic House*
@doritos91381 none WTF man just go to pond get some clay and craft bricks
npc grian confirmed
doritos91381 none clay can be found in almost all bodies of water which is then smelted into bricks. If that’s difficult then you’re bad at the game
Biscuit Joe you can find it in almost all bodies of water, not too hard
Ikr
That was a great video I am a builder my self and i think you are absolutely right in everything you said because as an example i sometimes struggle with Over Detailing too. Have a great time with building guys💪🏼
8:53 i do these, but instead of making the room float I put fences to make it look like the fences are holding the room
3:46
He detailed it very minimalisticly
Me who can barely build a good looking roof: Bruh
All my builds I have ever made myself(yet)have all of the above mistakes(except overdetailing)
I should get an award
"He detailed it very minimalistically"
*Builds epic house of doom*
Bigslam1993 ... It literally had one fence gate per window and some shutters on the walls
@qjpb compared to what I build... No, its pretty overdetailed. .
It was detailed very minimalistically though
@Tenlay 3:45
Iskall man!!!
Honestly Grian should still make these types of building videos (along with the others of course)
It's just the best tutorial I've seen. Thank you so much!
4:28
If they were put in the same town I would personally be pretty suspicious that two houses have an identical style
There are definitely a few of these I'm doing. No custom trees, often square houses (but with simple roofs), little things like that. But that's because I'm not very good at working with custom trees (can't get them to look good) and more complex room layouts. I have been trying to get better at it, but the custom trees is just a nightmare for me 😅
“This house has very little detail.”
House: has more detail than I’ve ever put into all my builds combined
3:48 "very minimalistically"
Same
Same
Same
😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks. I needed to know this stuff, I was messing up at bad and didn't even realize why. This will be a great help for my building
Same
“Don’t defy the laws of physics” Grian says while he’s floating on air hahahaha
When it comes to my building palette, i mostly use wood and cobblestone type and i make a simple staircase roof
Great helpful video but I can’t stand those weird lumpy roofs loads of builders make where they put random blocks and slabs throughout the roof. It doesn’t look good and it just really bothers me
I present to you, minecraft Gordon Ramsey.
Grian: WHAT ARE YOU
mumbo: an idiot builder
Gridon ramsey
@Evan Law haq haq haq
I was about to say that lol
@ArcPlayz phanny
wow, i never realised there are so many builders out there with the same mindset as i have. i always feel like the inside is perfect, but the outside SUCKS, and this video really helps. even though i know all this its great to touch up and see how it's done.
And that’s why my first house was a hobbit hole.
A BEAUTIFUL HOBBIT HOLE
U have come a long way from this I love this old videos and the hardcore series
*Whatching this after Hermitcraft season 7*
Grian : "Try not to defy physics"
Also Grian in Hermitcraft S7 : *built an upside mansion*
My favourite way to build nice houses because I'm usually in survival is to start off with a small block house then add on walls and floors and etc. once the basic structure is down, most of the time when I built the full house shape all at once then it looks weird
I'm going to make a house that does everything that Grian tells me not to do.
LTN with a pure emerald, square tower:
Mumbo jumbo did that already :/
@A Man he has to overdeatail it so no
A roofless square overdetailed in one block type that is the wrong type. I'm here for that
how are you gonna make an overdetailed shoebox house
Grain: stop making mistakes
Me: “Einstein said that: ‘mistakes are good’”
Everything happens for a reason I guess 🤷 😌
What if its an accideht
Yes
*_grain_*
Making a mistake is okay but if you were to make that same mistake again then it isn't good.
But I always add nice details at my houses. Like a slanted roof, good color and stuff like that.
I remember making a large wooden hotel that has no details at all in a ripoff game of Minecraft. It was on one of the public servers, but after my mom's tablet broke I never could download the app again
I was so super proud of it, so I hope that whomever owns it after me takes good care of 'The Wooden Hotel by OneOddKid' (my naming skills have always been bad lmao)
Grian, you helped me a lot! Thank you so much!
Minecraft: here’s a game that’s in your complete control, no rules just be happy.
Grian: there’s rules, follow.
Aiden Joubert this is more to follow some "design rules" that look better than a simple box, but if you like it well then there you go
There is no rules to Minecraft but when designing a house there's always been rules for that
Lord scott of the Rios it’s not really like that, it’s more like, hey! If you want to build well, watch my videos?
Pansycacke BUT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO BUILD HOW YOU LIKE!!!! IS IT THAT HARD TO UNDERSTAND
This made me laugh .🤣
Here’s my process:
Step 1: Acquire map of spawn.
Here’s my problem:
I want my house to be omni-symmetrical.
My warehouse will be in the basement, bed on the 2nd floor, and enchanting in the 3rd. Maybe the 1st will be a workshop?
You taught me everything I need to know about building in Minecraft
"As you see, this house is only made with one block"
The door: "Am I a joke to you?"
Tip: if your just starting fresh on minecraft and started you need to get a lot of wood so you can build a four block wall and then fill in the open space with the rest and you have a easy house.
Me: (Digs a hole in a mountain and calls it home.)
Grian: *So you have chosen, Death.*
That sucks grains house better :D
JOKES ON YOU GRIAN HAS A HOBBIT HOLE TOO- i-in hermitcraft- the older seasons- bu-but that one was detai-led.. nevermind
well, I'm not sure about that. personally, I've found that digging a hole into the side of a mountain can work out quite well. especially if you detail the outside with a overhang.
i put a bed on a mountain and called it home
I mean, I'd call it more of a defense mechanism, you're just trying to survive a few nights
I built my first survival house in a mushroom and its honestly perfect
This video was really helpful! Thank you!
It’s very hard to find a beautiful house build that’s efficient.
There is a downside to straying away from the rectangular shaped house, if you go crazy with the shape of the house, it'll end up looking like more of a mess than anything that's more pleasing and fictional
5:07 Am I the only one who still thinks the rectangular house is the same quality as the weird shaped one if not better.
the way I look at building in Minecraft is there is no mistakes its all imagination and creativity if you like the way it looks keep it like that.
2:13
Luke TheNotable’s house: *sweats profusely *
Thanks a lot grian luv your vids great building tips.
Grian: “Don’t defy physics.”
Says while flying
That’s different
Laugh
yeah lol
@Aviation Gamer I don’t feel like explaining, but I can
@Aviation Gamer lol
Thanks for the idea to use multiple leaves in a custom tree
Grian you’ve helped me learn how to build roofs thanxs
I forced my sister to watch this to improve her building skills lol
How to build a house:
Step one: find a hole in a mountain
Step two: decorate hole
There is no step three
@I stole your liver while youre reading my username the villager house is fricking small
@Law Norris ok? :|
Step one : Dig 3 down
Step 2 : Put anything up on Ur block
There is no step 3
@UC_0wqN6setOUdPhXwBWfP0Q don't forget the 1000000 furnaces on the wall too
They tried to prove a point but he still made a masterpiece out of that rectangle, I love this channel but I miss the days before Hermit Craft took over
Edit: Just rethought about this and I want you guys to know that I mean no hate by this comment, this is and will always be my favorite MC channep
Btw at 3:00, if you make a house like that, you have a variety of room sizes for the interior
Come on man!

or just live in a village xD
Lol yes
lol
I actually think that the over detailing looks great
